Samra University of Oriental Medicine
Samra University, a private non-profit corporation, is the oldest school of Oriental Medicine in the United States. In 1979, we became the first school of Oriental Medicine to receive full institutional approval by the California State Department of Education. Our Master of Oriental Medicine degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Schools of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Samra University of Oriental Medicine is known internationally as a premiere teaching institution. Our reputation draws students from throughout the world. To accommodate students' varying backgrounds, classes are taught separately in three languages: English, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.
Oriental Medicine
The University's primary academic program is the Master of Science in Oriental Medicine, with extensive study in diagnostics and methods of treatment including acupuncture and herbology. The program is designed to prepare students to sit for licensure in California and in other states. Students should note that the California Acupuncture Board will not allow a student to sit for the licensure exams who has not completed an academic program of at least 36 months of study. Students must enter the University with the equivalent of two academic years (90 quarter units or 60 semester units) of study, then complete four and one-half academic years of study in acupuncture, herbology and Oriental medicine. This can be completed in 40 months, full time. To be awarded the degree, a student must have earned a minimum of 348 quarter units of credit accepted for transfer and/or taken while enrolled in Samra University. Because of the nature of courses required in this profession, many students will graduate with more than the minimum number of units. The degree must be earned within 8 calendar years (96 months) from the first date of enrollment.
