Job description:
An electrocardiograph technician (or EKG technician) operates EKG machines to detect and record the electronic impulses transmitted by the heart during and between heartbeats. EKG technicians begin the testing procedure by relaxing the patient and attaching three to 12 electrodes to the patient’s chest, arms and legs. The technician operates the EKG machine, which records wave tracings on a roll of paper. After the test is completed, the technician may mark sections of the report for the physician to review.
Work environment:
EKG technicians work in hospitals and clinics.
Training requirements:
EKG technicians are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent and receive on-the-job training. Some employers prefer the completion of a one-year certificate program.
