Internships & Volunteering
Why Volunteer?
A volunteer or internship position allows you to see up close what it’s like to work in a hospital, nursing care facility or health clinic. It is a very common way to find out what your interests are and decide what’s right for you.
A volunteer or internship position will also enhance your resume or training program application. The people you work with as a volunteer or intern can serve as job references for you or may even hire you down the road.
Some training programs even offer credit toward your degree for internship positions. These programs are often called externships. Talk to your school counselor or program advisor to find out whether your training program offers an internship program you can count toward your degree.
The details vary, but most facilities ask their volunteers to commit a certain number of hours per week over a period of a few months to a year. Volunteers are unpaid, while internships can be paid or unpaid. If you can spend the time at an unpaid internship or volunteer job, make sure you'll be getting the type of experience you want before making a commitment.
