Job description:
Speech language pathologists and speech therapists diagnose, treat and prevent speech, voice, swallowing and other related disorders. They use written and oral tests, as well as special instruments, to diagnose the nature and extent of impairment and to record and analyze speech, language and swallowing irregularities. They help patients develop or recover reliable communication skills so patients can fulfill their educational, work and social roles.
Work environment:
Speech language pathologists and speech therapists may work in speech and language clinics, medical facilities or schools.
Training requirements:
Speech language pathologists and speech therapists are required to earn their master's degree. They are licensed by the State of California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board.
