Pharmacists distribute drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide information to patients about medications and their use. They counsel patients and answer questions about prescription drugs, including questions regarding possible side effects or interactions among various drugs. They provide information about over-the-counter drugs and make recommendations after talking with the patient. They may also complete third-party insurance forms and other paperwork.
Work environment:
Pharmacists may work in retail pharmacies, or hospital- or clinic-based pharmacies. Some pharmacists may travel to nursing care or other health care facilities to monitor patients' drug therapy.
Training requirements:
Pharmacists are required to earn a doctorate. They are licensed by the State of California Board of Pharmacy.
