How to Stand Out
Whether you just finished your training or are a current health worker, there are a number of things you can do to stand out when applying for a job.
Talk to the People You Know
When looking for a job, talk to friends, family, former classmates or former instructors to let them know. They may work at places that are hiring or can let you know when a position opens up.
Consider a Volunteer or Internship Position
Volunteer or internship positions are a great way to get your foot in the door and can be a stepping stone to a paid position. Even if the employer you volunteer or intern for isn’t hiring, you can put the experience on your resume or ask them to keep you in mind for future positions. Visit Internships & Volunteering > Turn It Into a Job for more.
Join a Professional Association
Many health jobs, including physician assistants, health interpreters and others, have professional associations you can join. Search online to see if there is a state or local association for your job.
Professional associations may offer member benefits such as access to job listings and e-mail lists. It is also beneficial to list these memberships on your resume because it shows you are committed to your field. Many professional associations also have student chapters if you are still in training.
If You Don’t Have Hands-On Experience
Remember, all employers look for a general set of job skills, no matter what the job. Think about previous jobs and how the skills relate to health care. Be sure to mention things like:
- Good work ethic
- Time management
- Getting along with others
- Teamwork
- Self-discipline and self-confidence
- Being flexible
- Respecting workplace culture
- Attention to detail
