Job description:
A phlebotomist draws blood from patients or blood donors. They assemble equipment, verify patient identification numbers, and draw blood either by puncturing a person's finger or by extracting blood from a vein or artery with a needle syringe. A phlebotomist labels, transports and stores blood for analysis or for other medical purposes.
Work environment:
A phlebotomist can work in hospital, medical laboratory, blood bank, clinic, physicians' office or other health care facility.
Training requirements:
A phlebotomist is required to complete 80 hours of training. They are certified by the State of California Department of Health Services.
