Job description:
Clinical laboratory scientists and medical technologists examine and analyze body fluids, tissues and cells. They look for bacteria, parasites or other microorganisms, analyze the chemical content of fluids, and match blood for transfusions. They also prepare specimens for examination, count cells and look for abnormal cells. They use automated equipment and instruments as well as microscopes, cell counters and other sophisticated laboratory equipment.
Work environment:
Clinical laboratory scientists and medical technologists work in hospitals or independent laboratories.
Training requirements:
Clinical laboratory scientists and medical technologists are typically required to complete a bachelor's degree and a one-year internship, although it is possible to qualify through a combination of education and on-the-job training. They are licensed by the State of California Department of Health Services.
