Job description:
Acupuncturists insert fine needles into the body's surface to influence the body's physiological functioning. After diagnosing a patient and discussing treatment, the practitioner performs the acupuncture. At the end of the session, the acupuncturist may prescribe herbal therapies for the patient to use at home.
Work environment:
Some acupuncturists work in offices alone and perform all of the office duties, while others work as part of a larger office with support staff.
Training requirements:
Acupuncturists are required to complete a minimum of 2,348 hours of education and training, usually in a four-year academic program. California also offers four-year apprenticeships. Acupuncturists are licensed by the State of California Acupuncture Board.
