Job description:
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) respond by ambulance to medical emergencies. They are sent by specially trained dispatchers who maintain radio contact or patch them through to medical professionals for ongoing instructions. EMTs examine victims to determine the nature and extent of injury or illness and administer first aid and emergency basic life support, such as giving oxygen or CPR. They continue treatment during transport to hospitals.
Work Environment:
EMTs drive emergency vehicles with special communication and medical equipment; they work both indoors and outdoors.
Training Requirements:
Emergency medical technicians are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent to enter a training program. Certification is required.
