The interview

If you receive a request for a job interview, your resume has accomplished its purpose. Now you must prepare for the interview. At the interview you hope to convince a potential employer that you are the best person to hire for the job. Here are some ways you can stand out from the crowd:

Interview tips

  • Look like a professional.

Wear clothing to reflect that you are organized and presentable. It’s better to dress up than to dress down, so don’t wear casual clothing.
  • Act like a professional.

Be courteous and respectful. It’s best to turn off your cell phone before going in for the interview.
  • Anticipate the employer’s needs.

Bring an extra copy of your resume, a list of references and letters of recommendation.
  • Do your homework.

Know about the company and what it does in addition to knowing about the job requirements.
  • Prepare questions.

Your interviewer will appreciate that you took the time to study the position and the company, and asking questions shows that you are committed to learning more.
  • Save discussions about salary for later.

The appropriate time to discuss salary is after the employer offers you the job.
  • Practice interviewing.

Have a friend or family member ask you questions about your past experience, qualifications and what you hope to get out of the position.
  • BE ON TIME.

Leave extra time to allow for traffic or other delays. You’ll arrive feeling more relaxed, and you’ll show the employer that you are reliable.

The follow-up

At the end of your job interview, you should reaffirm your interest in the job and ask the employer about any next steps you should take to move farther in the application process.

Afterward, you should send a thank-you note to individuals you met during the interview.
